During this lecture I learned about the progression towards NUI and why it makes more sense for people. It allows people to do the gesturing rather than relying on a device for all the information. Bill Buxton described it in an easy way by explaining how even when we write on paper, there is a zone that we concentrate on writing. That zone is where it’s more natural for humans. Another example is through viewing a photo on a phone. People can zoom and pan on the screen to see more. A more natural approach is to move the phone to pan in the photo. NUI exists in the medical and gaming industry. Doctors and researchers may use VR to emulate what motions and actions they need to practice, rather than using a controller. In gaming people can use their eye movements or arm movements to control what occurs in the game. Overall, it’s important to think about the context and cognitive load of designing for NUI.
They led us through an exercise to make NUI for various topics. It was an interesting way to see how different actions and tasks can be interpreted in different ways.
