Optimizely
Optimizely Product Design Internship
During the summer of 2020 I was a Product Design Intern at Optimizely (now acquired by Episerver). Optimizely focuses on a customer experience optimization platform, specializing in A/B testing tools and experimentation. They evaluate performance through analytics and multivariate testing.
Some of the projects I worked on include:
📖Strengthening UX Research Culture
At the time, there was only 1 UX Researcher and there wasn’t a lot of support to hire an entire team. I worked alongside a UX Research Intern to curate a plan to encourage others to conduct more UX research. Another problem we solved for was having 1 place where anyone on the product team could see what research studies were currently being held. Before, all teams and individuals had their own system and method of documenting research making it impossible for cross-functional teams to know what’s happening. We proposed a solution on how and where to organize research studies to understand previous, existing, and future research studies, including the participants who were involved.
📝In-Product Recruitment
There was a need to recruit more customers for a UX Research study (inspired by the above initiative) for Optimizely A/B testing product. I designed an in-product message and call-to-action that informed users how to be involved in our new research program. It was a low-profile message that existed on the main screen but was easily dismissible to not irritate our customers. Using A/B testing we also experimented with a couple variations to see what worked best.
📭Empty States
I created an audit of all existing empty states in the product and proposed a consistent style moving forward. All empty states previously were of all different styles, fonts, and alignment. Having a consistent style makes the product easier to use and easier to trust on the user side.
📈Growth Team
I also worked on the Growth team, whose focus was to curate and market the different tiers of the product. We experimented with different language and visuals to see what would make more sense to the users. We wanted to encourage customers to learn more about the different tiers and upgrade if they felt limited. Through journey mapping, user stories, and research, the team landed on the best solution.
