Crafting & Website (3/30-4/3)

This week I planned to finish designing the cards and getting them ready to be sent off to be delivered. It might take a while to get the cards ready and formatted on the site I plan to use. I also plan to figure out how to make the website and showcase the experience. It was a little hard to find motivation to get back into “work-mode” with suspended classes and other cancellations. But with baby steps, I think I’m slowly getting back into it.

Crafting Cards

While classes were suspended I continued to work on my project and get the cards ready to be shipped. I knew I wanted to get them sent out as soon as possible because I wasn’t sure how long shipping was going to take. Even with a rough estimate of 2-3 weeks, with the current situation it could be delayed. Once the cards arrive, I can finally start taking product shots and plan how to present the project.

I used makeplayingcards.com to create the cards because they had a lot of versatility in card size and customization. It actually took a while to make sure all my upload settings were correct. This included the pixel dimensions and centering the cards. Sometimes the resolution was too low, so I had to resize the cards. I also had to make sure the rules were sized properly with their guidelines. Lastly, I designed the card sleeve but originally had the wrong template. Another issue that came up was considering the bleed of the cards. I used the templates the site provided to make sure there was enough buffer room.

Website

After experimenting with what squarespace is capable of, I want to go ahead and use it as a platform for the website for this card game. It gives it the ability to live on a site with a domain without having to purchase one. I might have less room to explore certain designs, but it’ll also give me a chance to see how I can push squarespace to be an effective tool.

There is an option to make a 1 scroll “cover” page which will be a good option for what I originally intended to do. I can still use the same fonts and colors that are already in my design. This is a good start for where I want this to go.

Updated Rubric Review 2

This is the updated rubric review 2. Since we had such a long break since our last class, I had to go forward with the shipping of the cards to ensure they would come in time. I also made the decision to go ahead and work with squarespace for website design to make the site live. I’ll still try to customize it as much as I can, but I prefer having a site with a workable domain.

Reflection

I didn’t realize how tedious it would be to upload my designs into the card creating platform. Various times I had to reformat and resize items. I also realized I didn’t keep my files organized, so I ended up having to remake my rubric review in keynote. But this is a good lesson for me to constantly back up my files without clearing my computer so fast. I hope I get back into the flow of working on homework and projects.

Next Steps

Next week I plan to work on the website and perhaps other types of branding. I have to wait for the cards to be delivered before I can take product shots or shoot the video.
