Playtesting + Honing in on Visual Identity (3/9-3/13)

This week I had 2 playtest sessions planned with hopes of it being some of the last sessions. But because a rubric review is due this week, I’m not sure how much work I’ll get done on some other aspects.

Playtest Session

March 8 // 25 min // 2 player // Ages 22 + 23

This playtest session was with the previous cards as I didn’t have the latest version printed out yet. I gave them that disclaimer and let them know of the changes I’ve already made after the playtest session. Overall the session went as smoothly as last time.

  • Questions felt very relevant for them

  • They enjoyed that you can choose how much they can disclose while answering a question

  • Good pacing

  • What happens if people take too long to answer? Maybe a timer? Or a free pass to redraw new questions?

    • Would be nice if everyone could start with an ability to redraw/shuffle cards. Could be a token or separate card.

  • “I feel slightly lighter (after gameplay).”

  • “I feel uncomfortable, but it’s not a bad thing.”

  • “Easy to discuss some of these topics because I was given prompts, rather than having to randomly bring it up to friends.”

  • “I enjoyed that this creates a space ready to talk about these things.”

I showed them a digital version of the new rules and it cleared up the questions/concerns they had about the one they looked through.

This playtest confirmed what I enjoyed about the previous session and what I’ll keep in the rules. The number of cards in the hands and play style are effective.

Playtest Session

March 10 // 28 min // 2 player // new cards // Ages 20 + 24

This playtest session also went smoothly but it was it was different in the sense that the participants were less open about sharing some stories.

  • The color red was not very legible on the cards

  • “This would feel very different with close friends versus acquaintances. Some questions I might be uncomfortable with some of the questions. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not.”

  • It might be more effective with the cards being different colors rather than the outline

  • “It felt therapeutic to talk about some of these topics”

  • “I liked that I could choose which questions I wanted to answer. It also gave me time to think about how to answer some of the harder questions.”

Rubric Review 2

Website

I’m going to create a 1 scroll webpage that showcases the experience of the card game. It will show how to play the game, but also provide resources for people on loss and grief. I also want to include my own story and why I decided to create this game. And once this is designed, I also want to make it mobile friendly.

Reflection

I got 2 playtest sessions done and it contributed a lot to how to finalize a few cards and wording in the game. Also, while working on the rubric review, I got to reflect on how much work has gone into this project so far, even when I feel like I’m not doing a lot. I also did a bit of ideation for what the website will look like. It will be a one-scroll with a few key elements.

Next Steps

My next steps are to create wireframes for the website and mobile version. I also plan to finalize the card design to have them shipped to me with high quality cards.
